Office Pantry and Kitchen Cleaning
The pantry generates more complaints than any other area of an office, and almost always over the same three items: the sink rim, the underside of the tap and the front of the refrigerator at handle height. Appliance interiors are normally excluded by default, which is reasonable as an exclusion and unreasonable as a surprise, so settle it in writing.
A pantry is a small area that produces work out of all proportion to its size. It is used all day by people who are not thinking about cleaning, it combines water, food and heat, and it is the one place where the standard is noticed by everybody rather than by the person who manages the contract.
The Three Items That Generate the Complaints
Wiped surfaces are easy and almost always done. These three are not:
- The sink rim, where the basin meets the counter. It collects and it is at eye level when someone is standing at it.
- The underside of the tap, which nobody sees until they do.
- The front of the refrigerator at handle height, which every person in the office touches every day.
Name them in the specification. It takes one line and it removes most of what people complain about.
Appliance Interiors
Inside the refrigerator, the microwave and the dishwasher sit outside a nightly scope by default, for a practical reason: a cleaner cannot decide what in a communal refrigerator is somebody's lunch and what is three weeks old. Someone has to make that call, and it is not the cleaning crew's to make.
Two workable arrangements. Either your team clears the refrigerator on a stated day and we clean it that night, or we clean it on a fixed rotation and everything left inside on that date is discarded — communicated to your staff in advance. Both work. What does not work is leaving it unstated and hoping.
Refuse Is the Item That Becomes Urgent
Food waste is the one thing in an office that gets materially worse overnight, and worse again over a weekend or a closure. If your pantry generates food waste daily, the refuse line needs the frequency to match, regardless of what the rest of the specification runs at.
Floors and the Counter Overhang
Pantry floors take spills and crumbs, and the edge under the counter overhang is where both end up. It is awkward to reach, which is exactly why it is the place to look when you are judging whether the pantry is being done properly.
Consumables
Dish soap, sponges, cloths, bin liners. Decide who buys them, who replaces them, and who notices when they are running out. The third is the one that never gets assigned and the one that causes the empty dispenser.

What Is Not Included Unless You Ask for It
This list is here on purpose. When a client and a cleaning company fall out, the cause is almost always an item each side believed the other had taken care of. Reading it now costs a minute; discovering it in month three costs considerably more.
- Interiors of refrigerators, microwaves, ovens and dishwashers, unless scheduled
- Washing or putting away personal crockery and utensils
- Deciding what in a communal refrigerator may be discarded
- Descaling or servicing coffee machines and water units
- Removal of food waste from the premises to an off-site facility
- Pest control of any kind, which is a separate licensed trade

Pantry & Kitchen Cleaning: Frequently Asked Questions
Will the cleaners wash up our mugs?
No. Personal crockery is left where it is. A cleaner who starts washing up is making judgements about other people's belongings, and it comes at the expense of the surfaces that were actually priced into the visit.
How often should the refrigerator be cleaned inside?
Monthly works for most offices, and the date matters more than the frequency. Fix a day, tell your staff that anything left inside on that date is discarded, and the job becomes straightforward for everyone.
Our pantry is the worst part of the office. What should we change first?
Usually the refuse frequency rather than the cleaning. Food waste is the one thing that deteriorates between visits, and a pantry emptied daily will read as clean even on an ordinary specification. After that, name the sink rim, the tap underside and the refrigerator front explicitly.
