Retail and Store Cleaning in New York
Retail cleaning is specified around trading hours rather than around an empty building. It covers the sales floor, entrance glazing and storefront, fitting rooms and mirrors, display cases, stockroom and back-of-house, and floor maintenance built for footfall rather than for office traffic. Servicing is performed after close or before opening.
An office and a store are not the same purchase, and a contractor who quotes them the same way has not understood either. The office is empty at eight in the evening and stays empty. The store traded until nine, opens at ten, and has no window in which a cleaner can work unobserved unless one is deliberately created.
Footfall Is the Variable That Matters
A small shop on a busy corridor takes more foot traffic per square foot than an office floor several times its size, and it takes it seven days a week. The consequence is that floor maintenance, not general cleaning, determines whether the premises look acceptable. A retail floor that is swept and mopped nightly but never restored on a rotation will look progressively worse every month no matter how diligent the nightly work is.
Establish the restoration rotation at the outset: how often, by what method, and how many labour-hours it represents. A specification listing only nightly tasks is describing part of the job.
The First Six Feet, and the Glass
Entrance glazing on a New York sidewalk carries more soiling in a week than most internal office glass carries in a quarter, and the floor immediately inside the door takes the weather with it. Those two items carry a disproportionate share of what a customer notices in the first three seconds. They belong in the specification explicitly, with a frequency, not folded into a general line about glass.
Cleaning Around Stock
Merchandise and displays are not moved. Cleaning is performed around fixed merchandising, which means the achievable standard under a rail or behind a plinth is a function of what can be reached without handling stock. Where you want beneath-fixture cleaning, it needs to be scheduled for a time when your own staff can move the stock, and that is a scheduling decision rather than a cleaning one.
Fitting Rooms
Fitting rooms concentrate everything a retail environment produces into a very small space: mirrors, hooks, seating, floor, and whatever was left behind. They need daily attention and they need it itemised, because they are the single most common omission in a retail cleaning scope.

What Is Not Included Unless You Ask for It
This list is here on purpose. When a client and a contractor fall out, the cause is almost always an item each side believed the other had taken care of. Reading it now costs a minute; discovering it in month three costs considerably more.

Retail Store Cleaning: Frequently Asked Questions
We trade seven days. When does the cleaning happen?
After close or before opening, and the two are not equivalent. Pre-opening attendance carries less risk of being cut short and leaves the floor presented at the moment customers arrive. Post-closing attendance suits premises that close early. Either works; the specification has to name which one.
How often should a retail floor be restored?
That depends on the finish and on footfall, and it should be established at survey rather than assumed. What matters is that a rotation exists in writing with a stated frequency and stated labour-hours, rather than being left as something to arrange later.
Will you move our displays to clean behind them?
No. Merchandise is not handled. Where you want cleaning beneath fixtures, schedule it for a time when your own staff can clear the stock and we will work to that.
